Nick Cassavetes has signed on to adapt and direct a new film about Joey Ramone, titled I Slept With Joey Ramone, based on the 2009 memoir of the same name, by Ramone's brother Mickey Leigh.
The story revolves around the birth of the punk movement.
Gene Kirkwood, who was the executive producer of HBO's The Defiant Ones, is producing and putting together the financing of the indie film.
"Nick is digging deep with Mickey Leigh," Kirkwood told The Hollywood Reporter. "The plan is he and Mickey will discover the talent and put a real band together," he added.
Joey Ramone passed away on April 15, 2001 after battling lymphoma.
