In the comics, Penguin is a crime boss in Gotham City. While his origin story has changed over the years, recent iterations of the Penguin portrays him as a wealthy scion of the Cobblepot family who uses his upper-class upbringing and connections for his criminal enterprise. He sometimes has an English accent as well, like in Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City. This could be the direction Reeves goes with the character by casting Farrell, who is Irish.Other cast members in Reeves’ Batman film includes Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordan, Andy Serkis (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Alfred Pennyworth, and John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone. Similar to other recent DC films like Birds of Prey, Reeves’ Batman is seemingly a standalone movie not connected to other DC properties, not even Todd Phillips’ Joker.
According to Jeffrey Wright filming on The Batman has already begun, and it’s scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021. Check out everything we know about The Batman or our coverage of The Joker which may be getting a sequel. Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN. You can reach him on Twitter.
