Despite meeting his maker at the end of The Last Jedi, as many expected, Mark Hamill will make a small final appearance here, most likely as a force-ghost version of Luke Skywalker, akin to Frank Oz's Yoda in the last film.

We hear his voice in the trailer speaking about how people can be gone but never leave us.

It's going to be emotional.

Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa

Despite much speculation about how the saga would wave goodbye to Fisher after a digital resurrection and recasting were taken off the table, Disney has confirmed that Fisher will reprise the role posthumously, appearing via unused footage from The Force Awakens.

Disney sought permission from Billie Lourd before using the footage, but are satisfied that this can help to bring Leia's story to a close.

The poster also shows that Fisher receives top billing in the film.

Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine

Yes, it looks like we expect Darth Sidious to make an evil return in some form.

Rey and Kylo Ren look set to find some iteration of Palpatine in the bowels of the Death Star ruins.

The British actress who appeared in 2016's acclaimed drama Lady Macbeth has been cast as Jannah.

Set photos have shown her sharing scenes with Finn, Poe, and Chewbacca and she's humanoid and has a cape! We reckon she is going to be a major part of the resistance.

Some rumours have suggested she is the daughter of Lando Calrissian, and at Star Wars Celebration, Ackie teased this possibility.

Richard E. Grant as Allegiant General Pryde

The Oscar-nominated Swazi-English actor Richard E. Grant - best known for his roles in Withnail and I, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Logan - has been cast in the role of a First Order leader alongside General Hux.

The Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan reunites with LOST creator Abrams for the final film in the Star Wars saga and plays a member of the Resistance who aids our heroes.

He is glimpsed in the trailer for the new film.

Matt Smith

It has been reported that former Doctor Who star Matt Smith will be joining the cast in a 'key role' - but we are yet to find out who.

However, recent rumours suggest he could be playing the role of young Palpatine, which leaves us with more questions than answers.

Smith has recently denied his casting with the Los Angeles Times, however, putting an appearance into doubt.

We will also be introduced to some new villains in the form of Sith Troopers.

There very interesting look has already been revealed.

Who won't be returning?

Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma

Finn killed the chrome stormtrooper in The Last Jedi and actor John Boyega confirmed that she is definitely dead at Star Wars Celebration.

Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke

The leader of the First Order and master of the Dark Side was murdered by his apprentice Kylo Ren iin the climax of The Last Jedi, with his true origins remaining unrevealed.

However, the Rise of Skywalker may just reveal where Snoke came from and who was pulling his strings.

Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo

An heroic leader of the Resistance, Holdo sacrificed herself to destroy the First Order's dreadnought ship, Supremacy.

Star Wars 9 plot

At this stage, we know very little about the plot. However, we do expect the film to wrap up the central storylines of the sequel trilogy.

The main crux of the film will likely be the final battle between the Resistance and the First Order, with Rey fighting on the side of good with her strong powers of the force against Supreme Leader Kylo Ren's dastardly forces, despite their complex connection in The Last Jedi.

There will be a time jump!

Also, expect the stories of the core characters to be neatly wrapped up at the film's conclusion.

We will also say goodbye to General Leia Organa forever, as Carrie Fisher makes her final bow as her iconic character following the death of the actress in 2016.

The footage from the trailers shows Rey and co journey to a desolate planet with what appears to be the ruins of the Death Star, narrated by a cackle that sounds like Emperor Palpatine.

We know from set photos that Poe and Finn will travel to a grassy planet where they meet Naomi Ackie's character, Jannah.

Additionally, concept art appears to show the moment Rey was left on Jakku by her parents. Could Ren have been lying about her parents being 'nobodies' after all?

Regardless, expect some huge surprises!

Rest assured, we will be keeping our eyes peeled for all Star Wars related news!
