Cast your minds back to 2015 when the best Friends rumour of them all (bar the reboot) took Twitter by storm. Could Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox aka Chandler and Monica be dating IRL?

Of course, that rumour turned out to be largely based on a picture of the pair that had been taken 10 years earlier. Reps also further crushed our dreams of a real-life romance when they said there was zero truth to them.

But, while the friends definitely aren't dating and may never have, reports suggest Matthew has had a thing for Courteney pretty much from the get go.

According to Us Weekly, the actor is "in love" with his co-star and former on-screen wife. Say what now?

"Matthew’s always been in love with her," they said. "Matthew has never fully been able to get over her." Whether the feeling was mutual we'll sadly never know.

Courteney is currently in a relationship with Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid, while Matthew is thought to be single after splitting from Mean Girls actress Lizzy Caplan in 2012 after six years together.

The Chandler/Monica bombshell comes a week after the pair enjoyed a mini reunion. Alongside a selfie of them with that LA glow, Courteney wrote "Guess who I had lunch with today....I KNOW!! Could I BE any happier? #realfriends", punning on some of the show's most infamous catchphrases.

Their fellow Friends cast members rushed to comment on the post, with new Instagrammer Jennifer Aniston saying: "MATTY!! ❤️❤️❤️ I LOVE YOU, GUYS". Lisa Kudrow followed: "Lucky lucky. #beautifulpeople."
