There's no escape from the past in No Time To Die.

Yesterday (December 4) saw the release of the first full trailer for the next James Bond film No Time To Die, which will serve as the fifth and final outing for Daniel Craig in the role.

The film also stars Lea Seydoux as Dr Madeleine Swann, Lashana Lynch as Nomi, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, and Ralph Fiennes as M.

The official plot announcement already revealed that Bond will be forced out of retirement after a request from old friend and CIA ally Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) to help rescue a kidnapped scientist from a villain with dangerous new technology (Rami Malek), but now we have had an even greater look at the plot of the film in the new footage.

Here's some of the biggest talking points.

Biggest moments in No Time To Die trailer

1. Rami Malek is terrifying as Safin

We finally got a really decent look at Malek's villain Safin - who some Bond fans already think is a classic Bond villain - and he is thoroughly creepy. In addition to a tense sit-down meeting with Bond himself, but he also seems to loom over the past of Madeleine Swann as a creepy masked figure giving us Phantom of the Opera vibes. Just who is the masked figure? Considering the continuing plot threads of Spectre, will he have a criminal connection to the influential terrorist organisation?

2. Dr Madeleine Swann is at the centre of the plot

When it was revealed that Lea Seydoux was reprising her role as Spectre leading lady Dr Madeleine Swann, many expected that Bond's lover would meet a grisly end before the opening titles started. However, the trailer reveals that Bond and Swann split due to dark secrets being revealed about her past - a likely source of contention for Bond as he's still stung by his past with Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). The pair are reunited, however, when Bond comes out of retirement to speak with Blofeld, just how does the new threat connect to SPECTRE? And will Swann's heritage as the daughter of SPECTRE member Mr White play a part in her being forced together with Bond again? Either way, Blofeld seems keen to point out that she will destroy Bond.

3. Bond vs. Nomi

We also got some great footage of Captain Marvel star as Nomi, a 00 agent who Bond collides with and who Moneypenny sarcastically jokes that she knew they'd get along. We see Nomi express skill and confidence in her role as an agent of MI6 and also suggests that Bond is something of an irrelevance now she's on the scene. Will they learn to work together to take down Safin?

4. Paloma is still a mystery

We see very little of new character Paloma in the trailer, as portrayed by Craig's Knives Out co-star Ana de Armas. We do see that she can capably use machine guns and also attends a glamorous event with Bond, but is she a friend or a foe? And just how big a role does she have to play in the fight with Safin?

5. Christoph Waltz is back as Blofeld

It's been long-rumoured but here is official confirmation that two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz is back as SPECTRE boss Ernst Stavro Blofeld. The previous film revealed Bond's adoptive brother Franz Oberhauser (Blofeld's previous name) as the "author of all [of Bond's] pain", so why would they trust Blofeld enough to be speaking with him? The villain seems to be a valuable asset for the UK, however, he is also keen to sow seeds of discontent between Bond and Swann. What does he have planned? Whatever happens, we are getting some serious Hannibal Lecter vibes.

No Time To Die is released in UK cinemas on April 2, 2020.
