If you're looking to get your 2020 diary full with events to cure any January blues then there's plenty of musicals coming to Liverpool to choose from.

Already there's been some huge shows announced for 2020 including The Book of Mormon which heads to the city for the first time ever in July.

Plus there's the return of beloved musicals such as Mamma Mia! and new shows Heathers and SIX touring the UK this year.

The Empire Theatre as well as the Playhouse and beyond are starting to have packed out schedules for the year.

The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon has won nine Tony Awards

Smash hit musical The Book of Mormon is heading to Liverpool for the first time ever this year.

It comes from the makers of South Park and has quickly become one of the highest grossing musicals of all time despite debuting in 2013.

The story follows a pair of Mormon boys, who are sent on a mission a long way from their home in Salt Lake City.

Last year it had a huge run at Manchester's Palace Theatre which was extended due to huge demand.

While the London production opened at the Prince of Wales theatre in 2013 and has sold out every single one of its 2,380 performances to date, broken records for the highest single day of sales in West End history and won four Olivier awards.

It will have a four-week run at the Empire Theatre from July 14 until August 8 and tickets are available from ATGTickets.com.

Mamma Mia!

MAMMA MIA! International Tour Cast 2018/2019

The feel-good show Mamma Mia! is returning to Liverpool for 2020.

It's part of a UK tour which sees the beloved show celebrating its 20th anniversary of entertaining audiences, which has been seen by 65 million people worldwide.

For those who don't already know it follows the tale of a mother, daughter and three possible dads unfolding on a Greek island idyll with a brilliant array of supporting characters.

You can expect to hear the likes of 'Gimme Gimme Gimme', 'The Winner Takes It All', 'Take A Chance On Me' and 'I Have A Dream' to name a few.

Theatregoers can catch the show at the Empire from April 28 until May 9 and tickets are available from ATGTickets.com.

We Will Rock You

We Will Rock You is coming to Liverpool

Queen's We Will Rock You is coming to Liverpool as part of a UK tour.

The show, which promises the same spectacle as the band's legendary live performances, will feature 24 of Queen's biggest hits including Bohemian Rhapsody, I Want To Break Free, We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga and of course We Will Rock You

The show debuted in 2002 after a meeting between actor Robert De Niro with musicians Brian May and Roger Taylor six years earlier, with the movie star asking the pair if they'd ever considered making a musical based on their songs.

It's since been seen by more than 15 million theatregoers in 17 countries, with this upcoming tour following the release of the Oscar-winning biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

It will run at the Empire Theatre from March 30 until April 4 and tickets are available from ATGTickets.com.

SIX

The West End cast of musical Six, about the wives of Henry VIII

SIX the musical sees the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales.

From Tudor queens to pop princesses, the show remixes 500 years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power.

Originally an Edinburgh Fringe Festival show it's since been nominated for five Olivier Awards including Best Musical and saw all the main actresses nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical.

The show made its West End debut in January last year and has since been extended to July 2020, plus its also opened in Australia, toured North America and will head to Broadway this year.

Bat Out of Hell

Bat Out of Hell is heading to the Empire Theatre

Rock musical Bat Out of Hell is coming to Liverpool this year for an over the top theatrical spectacle.

Join Strat, the forever young leader of rebellious gang ‘The Lost’ as he falls in love with Raven, the beautiful daughter of the tyrannical ruler of Obsidian.

The show features songs including 'I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)', 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now', 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad' and of course the title track.

In 2019 the show finished up its run on the West End after two years and will tour to the likes of Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Oxford before finishing up in Liverpool.

You'll have to wait a while for this one as it arrives in Liverpool on December 8 and runs until January 2 in 2021. Tickets are available from ATGTickets.com.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie

The cast of Everybody's Talking About Jamie

The feel-good musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie is heading out on its first ever UK tour in 2020.

Inspired by a true story it follows 16-year-old Jamie New who lives on a council estate in Sheffield but he doesn't quite fit in. Supported by his mum and friends he overcomes prejudice and beats the bullies to step out into the spotlight.

The UK tour will see Layton Williams and EastEnders’ Shane Richie both reprise their roles from the critically acclaimed West End production.

The West End version has also featured guest stars including RuPaul's Drag Race winner Bianca Del Rio, judge and Strictly star Michelle Visage and Steps' Faye Tozer.

Heathers the Musical

Heathers The Musical is based on the 1988 film starring Winona Ryder

80s cult classic Heathers has been adapted for the live stage and the musical is coming to Liverpool.

The premise says: "Welcome to Westerberg High, where Veronica Sawyer is unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true.

"Until JD turns up, the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody."

It's based on the 1988 film starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty which explores sexual assault, bullying, teen suicide and violence in schools

Originally the film was not a financial success but the black comedy later developed a cult following thanks to its subversion of the teen film genre and iconic quotes.

Curtains

Jason Manford will star in the musical whodunnit Curtains at the Empire Theatre this year.

The show it revolves around a murder that takes place on the set of a Broadway-bound musical called 'Robbin Hood'.

Manford plays Frank Cioffi, a huge musical theatre fan who has to try and find the killer whilst giving the show of a lifetime.

It will feature classic Broadway tunes as well as plot twists and unforgettable characters.

The show heads to Liverpool on January 28 until February 1 and tickets are available from ATGTickets.com.
