ANSWERS

1. A. The Mirage opened in 1989 and at the time was the world’s largest hotel with more than 3,000 rooms, and the most expensive ever constructed at more than $600 million. Built by Steve Wynn, it was considered the first megaresort on the Las Vegas Strip. The Mirage was also home to Las Vegas’ first family-friendly entertainment production, Siegfried & Roy. The magic show—which was featured in Vegas Vacation—ran from 1990 to 2003, tragically shutting down after Roy Horn was critically injured onstage.

2. False. The film was inspired by the story of real-life mobster Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, who ran multiple casinos in Las Vegas throughout the 1970s and early ’80s, including the famed Stardust hotel, which was depicted as The Tangiers. The movie also starred Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, who portrayed real-life mob enforcer Anthony “The Ant” Spilotro and Rosenthal’s wife and socialite Geri McGee, respectively.

3. C. In the film, based off the Hunter S. Thompson novel of the same name, the Bazooko Circus Hotel was closely modeled after the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino. The film even depicted Circus Circus’ famous carousel-themed bar known as the Horse-A-Round Bar.

4. B. The Matt Damon spy franchise spent two weeks filming the car chase scene on the Las Vegas Strip. The scene ended with a SWAT vehicle crashing through the casino floor of the actual Riviera hotel casino, which was already shut down and scheduled for demolition a few months later.

5. False. The villa was actually a constructed set on the Warner Bros. movie lot located in Los Angeles. However, the hotel’s hallway scenes in the movie were actually filmed on the 24th floor of Augustus Tower at Caesars Palace.

6. C. Some of the scenes filmed at the property include shots of the hotel’s lobby, hotel suite, café, casino floor and the Stripside façade of Miracle Mile Shops. Other scenes filmed in Las Vegas include locations like the Bellagio fountains, the pool and the now-shuttered Rain nightclub at Palms, and on the patio of Pure nightclub, which is now Omnia Nightclub at Caesars Palace.

7. A. Originally built in 1942, the church is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and remains the oldest-operating structure on the Las Vegas Strip. The replica of an Old West mining town church has been moved three times throughout its history. It was first next to the Last Frontier Hotel, then moved to the grounds of the Hacienda Hotel and then to its current location on the corner of Russell Road and Las Vegas Blvd., near the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign.

8. B. Frank Marino is the longest-running headliner in Las Vegas. The entertainer has the only distinction of having two Las Vegas Walk of Fame stars, and was honored for his hard work in Las Vegas entertainment with a proclamation by Mayor Oscar Godman making Feb. 1 “Frank Marino Day.” The drag superstar currently stars in Legends in Concert at the Tropicana Las Vegas.

9. C. Mystere at Treasure Island is currently Cirque du Soleil’s longest-running show, opening in 1993. Cirque du Soleil currently has six shows on the Las Vegas Strip.

10. A. All three resort casinos are currently operated by MGM Resorts International. Most of the movie was filmed on location at the Bellagio for six months and included scenes shot at the resort’s fine-dining restaurant Picasso, on the casino floor, the lobby, the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and in front of the hotel’s famous fountains show.
