All the movies and TV shows hitting Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime in November 2020
Highlights include a documentary about a Boston man imprisoned for 22 years for a murder he says he didn't commit.
November was supposed to be a big month for movies, with delayed blockbusters and Oscar hopefuls hitting theaters that had been largely closed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. While some titles like Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” have arrived in cinemas, every major studio has pushed the majority of its major films until 2021.
All of that is a roundabout way of saying that November is shaping up to be another month of entertainment dominated by streaming. Luckily, streaming giants like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime still have plenty of new releases coming up, as well as some old favorites.
Here’s the full list of new movies and TV shows arriving on the three platforms in October, as well as our must-watch picks from each company.

Top Pick: “I Heart Huckabees”
Mark Wahlberg has settled into a comfortable, lucrative career path with his movie roles in the last decade-plus, playing the same type of good-hearted, blue-collar everyman in nearly every project. With David O. Russell’s “I Heart Huckabees,” Wahlberg masterfully tweaks the archetype, playing a firefighter vehemently opposed to fossil fuel usage who hires a pair of “existential detectives” (Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin) to help him discover the meaning of life. Hearing Wahlberg deliver off-the-wall lines like “Ah, here he comes, the man poet who banged France’s dark lady of philosophy!” and watching him discover the zen-like bliss of being repeatedly hit in the face with an exercise ball will make you wish Wahlberg stepped out of his comfort zone more often.

Top TV pick: “Killing Eve” (Season 3)
If you’ve been waiting to catch up on this BBC dark comedy/spy thriller, now’s the time to jump in. Season three brings the latest in the cat-and-mouse game between intelligence investigator Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh, “Grey’s Anatomy”) and psychopathic hitwoman Villanelle (Jodie Comer, “Thirteen”). Maybe “cat and mouse” isn’t the right term to describe the duo’s relationship since felines and rodents rarely jump into bed together and lose their respective jobs due to mutual obsession, but you get the picture. Comer is a particular treat in her Emmy-winning role, which may bode well for her upcoming lead role in the Boston-filmed adventure comedy “Free Guy”.

Top pick: “Hillbilly Elegy”
Following October’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Netflix is releasing another Oscar hopeful in November with a drama titled “Hillbilly Elegy.” Directed by Ron Howard (“Apollo 13”), the film focuses on three generations of a southern Ohio family teetering on the brink thanks to struggles with poverty and addiction. J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso) has seemingly escaped this cycle, as the former marine and current Yale Law student is about to land his dream job before a family crisis brings him home. As J.D. reconnects with the two women who raised him, mother Bev (Amy Adams, “Arrival”) and grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close, “Fatal Attraction”), J.D. comes to appreciate his family’s impact on his life — for better and for worse. “Hillbilly Elegy” debuts on Netflix on Nov. 24.

Top pick: “Trial 4”
On Nov. 11, Netflix will release an eight-part documentary series based on Sean Ellis, a Dorchester man who spent 22 years in prison after being convicted of armed robbery and first-degree murder in the 1993 death of Boston Police detective John Mulligan. Ellis was freed in 2015 after new evidence emerged, but faced the prospect of a fourth trial in Mulligan’s death. The documentary begins shortly after Ellis’ release as he and his attorneys fight to prove that corrupt police officers, unreliable witnesses, and a rigged system were what put Ellis in jail when he was 19 years old.

Top Pick: “Romancing the Stone”
It’s apparently Michael Douglas month over at Amazon: The streaming service has two of the actor’s biggest hits from his 1980s heyday joining the Prime Video library on Nov. 1. Rather than highlight the well-known “Wall Street,” queue up “Romancing the Stone,” a 1984 gem of an adventure film starring Douglas as an exotic bird smuggler who must help a romance novelist (Kathleen Turner) escape Colombia. As they avoid smugglers, drug dealers, and crocodiles, the mismatched pair becomes quite fond of each other along the way.
