Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed the touching story behind the very special Harry Winston jewelry she wore at her wedding to Brad Falchuck, explaining that they were a gift from her late father in celebration of her 1999 Oscar win.

The 48-year-old actress reflected on some of her most memorable fashion moments in a new video for Vogue, but wiped away tears when she discussed what she wore as she accepted her Oscar for Shakespeare in Love.

Gwyneth had donned a now-iconic Ralph Lauren dress with a Harry Winston necklace and earrings that were on loan for the ceremony — but when she took home the big award, her father, Bruce Paltrow, purchased them for her.

Two decades later, Gwyneth wore the sentimental diamonds for her 2018 nuptials as a way to have her dad there on the big day.

Gwyneth looked back fondly on her Oscars outfit from 1999, discussing the Ralph Lauren dress made just for her.

Bling bling: Her father had purchased the necklace for $160,000, and the jeweler added the $25,000 earrings for free

'It's a funny story because it was in the days before stylists, and I had been looking through the Ralph Lauren lookbook, and in the show they had this pink bubblegum taffeta skirt. And I said, oh, that's very me,' she said.

She asked if she could borrow it, was thrilled when the designer offered to make something for her.

'I love it and I kept it and I have it,' she said.

But even more special were the Harry Winston jewels she wore for the big night, including a platinum 40-carat diamond princess necklace she styled creatively as a choker and a pair of diamond cluster earrings.

'I had borrowed this Harry Winston earrings and necklace for the Oscars and then after I won my dad, as a present, surprised me with it,' she said. 'Now I'm gonna cry. So... that was very sweet.'

'And I wore the earrings and necklace when I got married to Brad. In homage to my dad and as a way of keeping him there with us,' she said, wiping away tears and chiding the Vogue interviewer: 'I hate crying in public!'

Gwyneth talked about several more of her most famous looks, including those that were especially revealing — like the Prada 'dress' she wore to the Met Gala in 2012.

As it turns out, ultra-short mini wasn't a dress at all, but a top that she wore without the skirt.

'I guess I should mention that this was the shirt, and there was a big skirt that came with it, but I was like, no. This is great. I love this,' she said.

'You gotta get the weapons out, so I decided to go with just the shirt. And I don't regret the decision. If I've learned one thing, it's how to not show your vagina on the red carpet,' she quipped.

There was also the Pucci dress — with a slit that ran from her back, down her side, and to her toes — that she wore at the 2010 premiere of Country Strong.

'It was very sexy,' Gwyneth said. 'I was wearing the highest heels of all time. I remember these heels and just suffering. I could barely stand in them, they were so...

'This I don't think I would wear again... right now, anyway,' she added. 'I think my kids would be so embarrassed if I left with, like, my a** out, hanging out of something. I don't think they would let me wear this

She also thinks it was 'risky' to have worn something without underwear.

'What if I had s*** my pants?' she asked with a laugh.

The star also had plenty of see-through looks over the years, like the Armani dress she wore to the 1998 premiere of Shakespeare in Love.

'I guess this was the beginning of my see-through looks, which, they've reared their ugly head once in a while throughout my sartorial history,' she said.

When asked if she was aware of the criticism of the dress at the time, Gwyneth replied in the negative, saying that 'there was no internet at this point' and she wouldn't have gone out of her way to buy a magazine to read critiques.

She was, however, aware of the criticism of the Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the 2002 Oscars.

'Everybody really hated this but I think it's kind of dope. I'm into it,' she said. I had a weird hangover about it for a while because people were really critical. I think at the time it was too goth. I think people thought it was too hard. I think it sort of shocked people. But I liked it.'

She also particularly loved a red Gucci suit she wore to the 1996 VMAs — and even has it packed away in case her daughter, Apple, wants a chance to take it out for a spin.

'I was super obsessed — as everybody was at the time — with what [Tom Ford] was doing for Gucci. He completely revolutionizing the brand. Everyone was clamoring to get anything they could from the collection and I was very lucky to borrow this beautiful red velvet tuxedo from him,' she said.

'Especially back in the day when I was lent or gifted something, I treated the clothes with so much reverence, and I still have them all packed and stored properly in case Apple, my daughter, wants to wear any of them.'

She went on to admit: 'She'll sometimes find old pictures of me on Instagram and she'll, in a very droll way, like kind of making fun of me, kind of not, like, "You're iconic, mom."'

'I was so thrilled because he always wanted to dress me and lent me beautiful things,' she said.

'They say I was a definitive '90s style lady. Which, at the time I just thought I was wearing minimalist stuff with brown lip liner and a lot of powder,' she added.

Gwyneth also touched on some of her more memorable movie looks, like her style as Margot in 2011's The Royal Tenenbaums.

'This is a really good luck. She's just a real original. Many a Halloween costume has been inspired by this look,' she said.

Meanwhile, a green Donna Karan outfit she dressed in for 1998's Great Expectations has also remained memorable — which she thinks is due in part to her sexy kiss with co-star Ethan Hawk.

'It's so funny that this look got so much and continues to get so much traction. I think partially because this scene in the film was really sexy, where Ethan and I sort of make out with a water fountain. That was a career highlight, by the way,' she said.

One dress that didn't seem to have quite such fond memories was the vintage Valentino she wore to the Emmys in 2019, which was so tight that she could barely move.

'This dress, there's no slit up the back so I had to take very small steps, so everybody really had to talk about it on the internet for a long time,' she recalled with an eye roll.

Perhaps most representative of her style, though, are the jeans and leather jacket she wore for an outing with Brad Pitt in New York City in 1996.

'He was so nice and we were a very '90s couple,' she said.

'I've always been a very intuitive dresser. I've always dressed like this, with jeans and a white T-shirt. Obviously the shapes of those jeans and T-shirts have changed over time, but I never gave a lot of thought to my outfits.'

Gwyneth also took a look back at her first Vogue cover in 1996 — 'I'm kind of preppy with a twist. And so I've always love great tailoring' — and the caped Tom Ford dress she wore to the 2012 Oscars — which she thinks started a trend.

'This was really a spectacular moment, I think, because it was so unusual and there were no capes anywhere before this,' she said.

While it's true that glamorous red carpet capes grew more popular in subsequent years, Sarah Jessica Parker wore her own caped gown at an event in 2011.

Finally, she looked fondly at the G. Label pants and bustier she wore to the 2020 Goop Lab premiere.

'I love this. This is what's so fun for me about being able to make clothes is we can really design for yourself. This was really kind of a special and fun look,' she said.

'For the most part I've always gravitated toward clothes that are strong and feminine and kind of classic. I'm not that flamboyant, so my clothes have never been that flamboyant.'
