Officer credited with warning National Grid crew about oncoming SUV
Whitman police say an officer's quick actions protected a National Grid crew Tuesday from an SUV that crashed into a work zone.
Officer Christopher Lee and other officers were working a detail in the area of 244 South Avenue, Route 27, at 11:40 a.m. when he noticed a man slumped over the wheel of a gray Honda CRV that was approaching, officials said in a statement.
"As Officer Lee approached the vehicle it moved forward, almost striking him, and traveled directly towards the trench that the National Grid crew was working in," officials said.
Lee alerted the workers to the approaching vehicle, and they were able to escape the trench before the SUV drove into it. The vehicle also collided with a front-end loader.
Officials believe the driver of the Honda suffered a medical emergency.
After the crash, the officers called for an ambulance. The driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
