Inside Robert Redford’s longtime $4.9M Utah ranch up for sale

Robert Redford is putting up his Charleston, Utah, ranch of 25 years on the market for $4.9 million.

The actor and director informally named the 30-acre horse ranch after his 1998 movie “The Horse Whisperer.”

Redford, 84, purchased the land in 1996 as a place for his horses to exercise during the winter, Compass agent Steven Mavromihalis told the Wall Street Journal.

Located 16 miles north of the Sundance Mountain Resort — the “arts [and] recreational community” that Redford created, with everything from ski lodging to summer theater — the ranch boasts panoramic views of Mount Timpanogos.

Made up of seven structures, the property includes a 1,460-square-foot farmhouse with two bedrooms, a 2,000-square-foot woodshop, a 3,200-square-foot garden hobby house, a boat garage, a hay barn, covered horse stalls, a horse-training ring and endless pastures.

“For the last 25 years, my family and I have loved and embraced this ranch as a base for our horse program, running clinics and serving as a home for our many beloved horses,” Redford said in a statement to the WSJ. “Looking ahead, we want to focus on expanding the facilities at our ranch located at Sundance in nearby Provo Canyon.”

Redford began amassing property in Utah in the 1960s when he bought 2 acres in Provo Canyon and built an A-frame cabin for his family.

In 1969, Redford’s acting career took off when he co-starred alongside Paul Newman in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” a landmark nouveau Western about a band of outlaws.

In 2018, Redford announced that he would retire from acting. His latest stints include executive producing the documentary series “Death Row Stories” and the documentary “Desert of the Real.”

Last year, Redford’s son James died of liver cancer at age 58.
