Brum has welcomed some superstar actors, directors and producers in the last decade - all who have chosen to film in the heart of the city for their latest blockbuster movie or TV series.

But where did it all start? And what incredible films and TV series have been shot here recently?

We've taken a look back at some of the times Birmingham was transformed into a film set - with stars such as Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg and Gemma Arterton all involved.

The Girl With All The Gifts

It was the film shoot which kickstarted a blockbuster revolution in Birmingham.

Based on (Mike) MR Carey's 2014 dystopian novel The Girl With All The Gifts it was originally going to be called She Who Brings Gifts on screen.

The 15-rated movie starred multi-Oscar nominee Glenn Close with Burton upon Trent's finest Paddy Considine alongside former Bond girl Gemma Arterton who played Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace.

Warner Brothers helped Film Birmingham to welcome a series of much bigger budget movies involving the likes of director Steven Spielberg, superstar actor Tom Cruise and multi-Oscar winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.

The Girl with All The Gifts was shot in the heart of the Colmore Business District in May 2015 with locations including Church Street, Eden Place, Waterloo Street and Needless Alley.

Warner Brothers shot The Girl With All The Gifts at various city locations and also at the long derelict former Powergen site in Shirley - now a giant apartment block known as an 'extra care' Village - where we were given special access to join the shoot for posterity.

Jawbone

The next film to be made in the city was boxing thriller Jawbone, though Ray Winstone seemingly appeared elsewhere and wasn't on set when we reported what it was like to be an extra in such a movie in March 2016.

The Golden Circle

Next up, in May 2016, was the first Kingsman sequel - The Golden Circle.

Actors Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Taron Edgerton were nowhere to be seen on the city's streets where 'second unit' scenes were being shot, but we captured scenes from a car chase around Colmore Row and Waterloo Street which scattered rooftop seagulls once the sound of machine guns went off as you can see in the video below where those watching were warned: "Guys there will be gunfire, there will be gunfire."

It was also a chance to see a new range of Jaguar 4x4 cars, too, as they chased a black taxi.

Gemma Arterton can currently be seen playing a character called Polly in the second Kingsman sequel, opposite Ralph Fiennes in The King's Man which opened in city cinemas on Boxing Day.

Ready Player One

Following on from The Golden Circle, Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg arrived in town in the summer of 2016 to shoot Ready Player One with his regular Schindler's List and now West Side Story cinematographer Janusz Kaminski behind the lens.

Scenes were shot at 'disguised' locations in the Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth and at Spaghetti Junction and you can see the back of the old Pavilions in one rooftop scene before it became the world's biggest Primark.

Spielberg kept a very low profile during the shoot even though he'd already worked as a producer on The Hundred Foot Journey penned by Steven Knight and starring Helen Mirren.

The Jaws director sadly didn't make himself available for interview during his stay in Birmingham and his cast did not have any big names to chase, either.

But when we asked cinematographer Janusz Kaminski what he thought of the city, the Saving Private Ryan Oscar winner told BirminghamLive: "It's lovely. A beautiful city."

Citadel

Fast forward beyond the first year of Covid-19 and in November 2021, Amazon Prime worked at night to enjoy around ten days of ' an incredible shoot ' for a new TV series called Citadel with Game of Thrones star Richard Madden starring with Priyanka Chopra.

A big riot scene was shot on Edmund Street outside of the entrance to the Gas Hall and the producers made a donation to the city's homeless groups after filming ended.

But what all of the above lacked, of course, was a global star to put the icing on Film Birmingham's cake...

Mission: Impossible 7

Enter Tom Cruise with Mission: Impossible 7 in August - and he didn't disappoint.

Tom was not only shooting in the heart of Birmingham, but was visibly doing so too - happily waving to fans watching him at work inside the Grand Central Atrium above Pret A Manger.

He also posed for selfies outside of the Grand Hotel where he stayed and happily promoted restaurant Asha's after going there for a curry where he will now be forever known as 'Two Tikkas Tom' after our story revealed he ordered a second portion with extra spices for his table.

What a shame Tom's BMW was stolen from outside of the hotel before dumping it at the back of a chicken shop in Smethwick.

Because out of all of the stars who've been here in the last few years, he was the one who was clearly willing to put something back as his photocall with the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Cllr Muhammed Afzal proved.

No wonder Brummies said they were ' embarrassed ' on his behalf.

Amanda Jevons said: "I feel embarrassed and ashamed. Is this all we want people to remember from visiting our country?"

Mark Smith added: "Tom cruise comes to Birmingham. Potential of thousands of pounds in revenue and further film contracts because of this. And we welcome him by stealing his car and luggage. Way to go Birmingham!"
