STAFF PICKS: Movies, shows and albums to stream this summer

It’s the start of the summer and The Signal is back! Get a little insight into your campus reporters and what they recommend to stream this summer:

TV (HBO MAX): I have absolutely loved watching the latest season of “Gentleman Jack” on HBO Max. It’s a period show based on real people from the past that is rich in plot, dialogue, and romance. Lesbian romance that is. I love that it shows the main character in all her masculine glory as she finds love and takes on ventures that were only acceptable for men to do at the time. Always nice to see a show without butchphobia!

TV (NETFLIX): I really enjoyed the show “The Vampire Diaries” on Netflix. The show has a lot of drama and teenage relevance. I think others should watch it because of the climax and the action and drama that the show has. It’s about 10 years old but still a great one!

FILM (HULU): “Death on the Nile” (a murder mystery), I recommend that anyone who likes puzzles to watch Death on the Nile. It has an elevated Sherlock Holmes vibe because Branagh is excellent at conveying Poirot as an incredible detective, but still a human with likeable characteristics as opposed to the usual insufferable know-it-all.

TV (NETFLIX): “Baking Impossible” (a competition show where a baker and an engineer are paired up and have to do a variety of tasks) This show is super fun to watch because two people (one with a more creative brain and another with a more mathematical brain) come together to make crazy, edible inventions. Yes, baking is a science… but this show takes it to another level!

TV (Hulu, HBO Max): One of my favorite tv shows is “The Venture Bros.” It’s on HBO Max, if your a fan of those 1960s era superheroes and Saturday morning cartoon shows and adult cartoon comedies then this is the show for you. It has 7 seasons with a movie coming out sometime in the future.

FILM (NETFLIX): I watched “Power Project” with Jamie Fox last night! I thought it was an awesome movie that was exciting and thrilling to watch. Great plot and a really interesting idea for a movie. Y’all should watch it if you haven’t!

AUDIO (YouTube): Since I don’t watch tv, I would say people should give Drake’s new album “Honestly, Nevermind” a listen. The vibe of the album is very chill and it would get people into a new version of Drake that he is presenting. His new style in this album is more of a laid back vibe instead of the average rap/hip-hop vibe.

Film (Netflix): “RRR” is an amazing foreign film from India currently on Netflix. As someone who has never seen a Tollywood film before this movie left me constantly in awe in its visuals and its story telling. It’s 3 hours long but very worth the watch.

TV (Disney+): Finished “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and I’d give it a 7/10.  The show encompasses not just the films, but the recent animation as well.  Show has a great start and finish, but got muddled in the middle.  Still I’d recommend giving it a watch.

TV (Disney+): This show is some of the best new Star Wars out there. With Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor back playing Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, this show has some good surprises. While a slow burner at first sight, it does not disappoint in telling of the phenomenal mission Obi-Wan goes on during his isolation on Tattooine.

TV (HBO MAX): I’m recommending that people stream “Barry” on HBO Max. It’s an incredibly compelling drama with some hilarious comedic elements and it just finished its third season with an excellent finale!

Film (Theater, Video on demand, Rental): “Everything Everywhere all at Once”; Directed by the Daniels (“Swiss Army Man”) it’s an insane ride of action, heart and pure visual insanity a must watch and must own in my book starring Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”) and Jamie lee Curtis (“Halloween”) with the comeback of Key Huy Quan (“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, “The Goonies”). Sit back and feel the everything, see everywhere it goes and enjoy this film all at once!

Film (HBO Max): “The Batman” (2022) starring Robert “Twilight boy-no-more!” Pattinson; it’s the Batman from the comic books, dark and gritty you can feel the intensity and weight of the bat in this one. Still brooding from Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” (2019) Pattinson is still in the zone and putting out nothing but good product lately. Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”) has crafted a long runtime but worth the watch, you will reconsider you favorite Batman after this one.

TV (HBO Max): “Peacemaker” on HBO max; it has John Cena (“Ferdinand,” 17 time WWE Champion) as a superhero with a great story narrative and outrageous fun and craziness that rivals “Deadpool.” From director James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Brightburn”) how could you go wrong; jump into this show with or without watching “The Suicide Squad” (2021) you will still have a great time laughing and cheering from the couch.
