For the first time in his storied career, Jake Gyllenhaal is leading a television series with the Apple TV+ adaptation of Presumed Innocent.

The star of Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead, Prisoners, and Southpaw fame portrays Rozat K. “Rusty” Sabich — a prosecutor at the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office whose world is turned upside down when a close colleague is murdered with all evidence pointing to him. As per the official logging: “Obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”

Apple TV+’s limited eight-part affair marks the second time Scott Turow’s best-selling legal thriller novel of the same name has been adapted for screens after Alan J. Pakula’s 1990 feature-length film. On this occasion, Rusty Sabich was brought to life by the one and only Harrison Ford, while the slain colleague/mistress Carolyn Polhemus was played by Greta Scacchi.

The star-studded ensemble cast of the new thriller features Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard, O-T Fagbenle, and Renate Reinsve. Jake Gyllenhaal has also executive produced the Apple TV+ reimagining of Presumed Innocent alongside an A-list creative team that counts showrunner David E. Kelley, Dustin Thomason, Ben Stephenson, J.J. Abrams, and more among their ranks.

Granted, he hasn’t ever really been idle in his career since breaking out with Donnie Darko, but it must be remarked upon: Jake Gyllenhaal has been extremely active recently. Aside from Michael Bay’s American remake of Ambulance, dipping a toe into voice work with Disney’s Strange World, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, and the forthcoming Road House remake headed to Amazon Prime Video (in which he stars opposite Conor McGregor), Gyllenhaal is already working on another Guy Ritchie flick alongside Henry Cavill and Eiza Gonzalez.

While details are still rather sparse at this current stage, the story will reportedly involve two extraction specialists who must plan an escape path for a high-level female negotiator. Expect plenty of Ritchie’s signature humour.

“There’s something special that happens when you collaborate with the same partners regularly: you build a shorthand and a trust that lets everybody do their best work,” said Guy Ritchie, having only just worked with Cavill and Gonzalez for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare; the director also famously cast Cavill in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

“Jake, Henry, and Eiza are all astonishingly talented, committed, and engaging actors. This is going to be an action-packed movie that is both intellectually stimulating and physically exhilarating.”

As for Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent series, June 14th, 2024 has been locked in for its official release date — check out the first-look sizzle reel below (0:54).
