Burlington’s track and field squads got the season off on a good foot, with both recording top-ten team finishes in the Lamar Invitational last Saturday. Behind a break-out performance from freshman My Lee, the Lady Cougars scored 36 points, earning them a sixth-place standing in the team race. The boys tied for 10th after scoring 26 points.

In her first high school action, Lee took second in the 100 and 200 and brought home the title in the 400. The only faster runner on the day was Cheyenne Wells’ sophomore, Roxy Unruh, who won Class 1A state titles in the 100, 200, and 400 relay as a freshman last year for Prairie. Charlotte Goodnow also reached the podium for the Lady Cougars, securing third place in the 3200 meter run, and fifth in the 1600.

The best showing for the Cougars came in the 3200, where Triston Esquival finished third, with Adan Lopez right on his heels. Lopez also made the podium in the triple jump, where he took sixth. Stanton Cure scored points for the team with a fifth-place showing in the 300 hurdles and seventh-place in the shot put. Weston Schaal collected seventh in the high jump, and the 800 relay team crossed the line in fifth place.

Burlington will attend the Spartan Spike in Berthoud on Friday.
