OpenAI delays ChatGPT’s image generator for free users

it has already surpassed company expectations, but free users will have to wait

OpenAI has announced that the company’s new image generator will be delayed “for a while” for free users, according to CEO Sam Altman. In an X post released on Wednesday, Altman wrote, “Images in ChatGPT are wayyyy more popular than we expected.” Altman also said that the team had high expectations for the latest feature.

The image generator, which was released on Tuesday and dubbed Images in ChatGPT, allows users to create images within the app using OpenAI’s reasoning model GPT-40. OpenAI showed off the image generator’s new capabilities, including improved text generation—something that previous AI image generation models have struggled with.

While it will remain unavailable to free users for the foreseeable future, OpenAI will most likely implement a three-image limit similar to what DALL-E had for free users when they are ready to make it more available.

Instead of testing the new feature’s limits with hyperrealistic images, ChatGPT subscribers have begun flooding the internet with various images and memes done in the style of Studio Ghibli. Some examples are Leonardo DiCaprio, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, and even the Narcos waiting meme.

Some users find that prompts relating to the Studio Ghibli trend aren’t working due to a reportedly inconsistent content policy. OpenAI’s team told The Verge that there is also a rigid safewall to prevent misuse and abuse of the software, targeting deepfakes, copyrighted content (as mentioned previously), and other harmful uses of the software.
