“Edward S. Curtis: the Man and his Legacy” is the subject of the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program at 10 a.m. April 6 at A Church, 419 D St.
John Graybill, great-grandson of Edward Curtis, and Coleen Graybill will explore the legacy of Edward Curtis’ 30 years of work producing more than 40,000 photographs documenting the culture of Native Americans, a press release stated.
Curtis’ 20-volume “The North American Indian” captured their music, dance, rituals and lifestyle. His efforts included early mountaineering adventures, Hollywood collaborations, photography techniques and a commitment to preserving Native American heritage through legislation.
John Graybill completed his photography degree at the Rhode Island School of Photography in 1979, and he has been honored by the Professional Photographers of America, which also recognized Curtis in the early 1900s. Graybill is president of the Curtis Legacy Foundation.
With degrees from Central Michigan University and Colorado Technical University, Coleen Graybill also is a photographer recognized by the Professional Photographers of America. She has published two books on Curtis’ unpublished photographs and writings and is spearheading two more.
The Graybills operate a photography business in Buena Vista.
Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science on the first Sunday of each month. Each presentation features a science topic that is understandable by both scientists and nonscientists.
Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free, and the public is welcome.
