Many think Macaulay Culkin made his film debut in Home Alone, but it turns out it was an earlier 1989 film that helped land him the life-changing role.
After making his debut in the drama Rocket Gibraltar, just a year before, the child star, now 44 years old, played Miles Russel in the hit comedy movie Uncle Buck.
The film was written and directed by John Hughes, the man behind The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and was an instant classic.
In fact, Hughes went on to write and produce Home Alone, the ultimate holiday film, in which he made Culkin one of the most successful child actors of the 1990s.
After working with the kid on set, Hughes had him at the forefront of his mind when taking the project to director Christopher Columbus. After holding hundreds of auditions, it was clear that Culkin was the man for the job.
Eighties' film fans are still raving about the “masterpiece” movie that is “family-friendly.” Reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes have praised the star for his acting in the film, as well as his castmates, with one saying that Culkin “steals every scene he's in.”
A review reads: “Macaulay Culkin on the brink of Home Alone is entirely adorable and a star in the making, for sure.” While another states: “The critics have it wrong. Uncle Buck is a masterpiece and very appropriate for today’s world. Great dialogue and a great story.”
Many remember Uncle Buck for the “comedic treasure” that is John Candy, who plays the leading role. After starring in the likes of Cool Runnings, Little Shop of Horrors, and Home Alone, Candy passed away in 1994 and left behind a legacy of much-loved American movies.
One fan of the film wrote: “Overall, Uncle Buck is such a childhood classic for me, a guilty pleasure if you will. Candy's talents clearly shine through here from beginning to end.”
Another shared their love for Candy, saying: “Love this movie! John Candy was a comedic treasure. I watch this movie almost every time I find it on TV. It's funny, cute, and just makes me smile. Laurie Metcalf is hysterical.”
“Such a shame he's no longer here,” one review states. “Such a funny and warm actor. Yes, I understand it's not the best film ever made, but I just find it such a warm and feel-good film, a casual watch.”
The film follows Candy as Buck, the laid-back, heavy-drinking, and horse race-obsessed brother of Bob, as he babysits his niece and nephew. His brother’s daughter is a rebellious teen, and Culkin’s character is her adorable little brother.
When he’s forced to go to the suburbs and take care of these kids, he has to adapt to a suburban life full of responsibility and one that he’s not ready for. With some luck and love, Buck goes on to surprise everyone, including his girlfriend, Chanice, to whom he was previously afraid to commit.
For those looking to get a glimpse of Macaulay Culkin before he shot to fame, Uncle Buck is available to watch on Netflix now.
