A ‘Record’ High in the Last 9 Years
In 2024, parents of 3,955 children in Belarus were stripped of their parental rights. This is the highest number since 2015. The number of parental rights terminations began to rise sharply after 2022, hrodna.life reports.
Over the past year, the number of children whose parents lost their rights increased by as many as 528, according to data from Belstat. This is the largest increase in recent years. Nine years ago, in 2015, the number of such cases was 3,382. Until 2017, this figure was growing, but afterward, including in 2021, the number of terminations steadily declined. It only started increasing again in 2022.
As in previous years, parents of younger school-age children (7 to 10 years old) and toddlers aged 2 to 3 years are most often deprived of their rights. In 2024, the number of terminations in these age groups also increased, especially among children aged 7–10, where the number of cases reached 1,047. Parents of infants under one year old are the least likely to lose their rights. In 2024, there were 278 such cases—an increase of 57 compared to the previous year.
