Valerie Bertinelli Knows Who Should Play Her in a Van Halen Biopic, but She Hopes to Be 'Dead' Before It's Made

"I told Wolfie, 'Make sure I'm dead,'" she recalled of a conversation with her son, shared with the late Eddie Van Halen

Valerie Bertinelli knows who should play her in a movie — but she doesn't want to see it.

In a new interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Emmy winner commented on the upcoming four Beatles films and spoke about the possibility of a Van Halen biopic getting made one day

Bertinelli, 64, joked about garnering comparisons to Yoko Ono for her own relationship with the late Eddie Van Halen, to whom she was married from 1981 to 2007. "Well, I have been called Yoko in my day," said the Hot in Cleveland actress, who welcomed 34-year-old son Wolfgang with Eddie.

"Oh, you didn't know that I broke up Van Halen?" she quipped to host Drew Barrymore. "But I could not play [Ono]."

A founding member of the band, Eddie played guitar and more in Van Halen from 1972 through his death in 2020, but the group had various lineup shifts throughout its run — with Wolfgang joining as bassist in 2007.

"As if I had the power to break up a band," added Bertinelli. "Yoko's an amazing woman. She's an artist, and she did not break up the Beatles. The Beatles had their own issues."

She recalled Van Halen having "their own issues," which led to the hardship within the band. "And it wasn't all Ed's fault. Okay, I'm just going to put that out there. Everybody loves to blame Ed, and he can't defend himself. Nowhere near was it all Ed's fault... He just wanted to write his music and play his music."

The Beatles' Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison are set to be the subjects of director Sam Mendes' four upcoming biopic films. Paul Mescal will play McCartney, while Harris Dickinson will play Lennon, Barry Keoghan will play Starr and Joseph Quinn will play Harrison.

Bertinelli doesn't want to see a casting announcement involving a characterization of herself anytime soon. "Oh God, I hope they never do one about Van Halen," she said. "Make sure I'm dead. I told Wolfie, 'Make sure I'm dead.'"

However, she has thought about who should play her on screen: "Selena Gomez. She would be amazing. But Selena, don't do it. Please don't do it."
