After Friday night’s forgettable loss to the Angels, the Dodgers look to get back to their winning ways, especially since Saturday night is a night that has been looked forward to since last season — the return of Clayton Kershaw to the mound.
To do so, they will need to fire back up the offense that was stifled by Jack Kockanowicz on Friday night.
Kershaw will face off against old friend Tyler Anderson, a lefty who is 2-1 on the season with a 2.58 ERA.
The Dodgers offense has been on a roll, and that is mostly due to the parts of the lineup that weren’t producing finally getting on track. Max Muncy seems to have found his groove, after a very rough start to the season. Over his last seven games, he is hitting .375 with two homers and 10 RBI. Michael Conforto, who started off strong but then severely cooled off, also seems to be warming back up again; he is batting .348 over his last seven games.
Hyeseong Kim has had a big impact in his limited time with the team, since he was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City. In Friday night’s game, he saw his streak of reaching base in nine consecutive plate appearances broken. But in that span, he had seven hits, one of which was his first major league home run and scored five times.
Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez are both set to return to the team soon. The question of who they will replace when they are back is a big one, and one of the more difficult decisions the team may have to make this season.
Kim has earned a stay in the bigs with his play so far. But three others have not.
James Outman seems the easiest decision, to return to OKC. In his time back in the majors, he is only batting .125, and only has two hits in his last 19 at bats.
But the other two that are not producing are long time veterans of the team, who may just unfortunately be at the end of their road.
Chris Taylor has not had anything going offensively the entire season. Although he has been prone to streakiness in the past, it does not appear that he is going to break out of his offensive funk anytime soon. The other in Miguel Rojas, who is slashing .267/.313/.333. Rojas has been undeniable in the clubhouse, being a mentor to everyone, and especially helping Mookie Betts fully transition back to everyday shortstop.
With a team as full of talented players as the Dodgers, hard decisions are always going to have to be made. It remains to be seen which decisions the Dodgers ultimately go with, but in the meantime some of those players’ day are numbered.
