Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back line that could predict Rise of Skywalker ending

Did Yoda reference Rey in George Lucas’ original trilogy?

Empire Strikes Back 'there is another' Yoda scene

A new Star Wars theory claims that Rey’s arrival in the franchise was foretold in The Empire Strikes Back.

According to Reddit user Cheekywanquer, a line spoken by Yoda (Frank Oz) in the 1980 film predicted that Rey (Daisy Ridley) would play a huge part in the future of the galaxy decades before her introduction in 2015’s The Force Awakens.

The line in question arrives during an interaction between the Jedi master and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), the latter of whom believes Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is their “last hope”.

Yoda responds: “No – there is another.”

The next film in the franchise, The Return of Jedi, seems to confirm Yoda was referring to Leia (Carrie Fisher).

However, the events of The Last Jedi (2017) means that this particular line could take on a different meaning, which would predict a big twist in forthcoming film The Rise of Skwalker.

“Yoda doesn’t seem surprised at all that Rey is as strong in the Force as she is, even going as far as to say she doesn’t need the ancient Jedi texts,” the Reddit user writes.

It’s important to note that the character of Rey – or even a new creation, who could one day show up in a new trilogy – was in mind when Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan wrote this line, but it’s exciting re-watching the scene knowing how important Rey would go on to be in this universe.

Also, it could be argued that, while Obi-Wan might say he's been told Leia was the one Yoda was referring to, we never actually see this take place.

If the theory is to be believed, The Rise of Skywalker will establish Rey as the galaxy’s saviour – something that fans are strongly expecting going into JJ Abrams’ final chapter.

Let’s not forget the small fact that Yoda could see into the future – is Rey going to restore balance in the force and be unveiled as the final Jedi?

Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker is released 19 December.
