Indian Artists, Films At Cannes Film Festival 2022

India is the country of honor at the Marche’ Du Films at 75th The Cannes Film Festival and it is the first country to be chosen for this honor at the festival. India’s Information and Broadcasting ministry picked six films for screening at the Cannes Film Market and none of these are in any competition at the film festival.

These include R Madhavan’s trilingual Rocketry The Nambi Effect, Marathi film Godavari and Achal Mishra’s Maithili film Dhuin, Hindi film Alpha Beta Gamma, Assamese Boomba Ride, and Malayalam film Niraye Thathakalulla Maram. Legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s 1970 film Pratidwandi will also be presented in an exclusive screening.

Oscar and Grammy winning musician AR AR Rahman makes his directorial debut with Le Musk that will premiere at Cannes XR in collaboration with Marché du Film. The 36-minute film features Hollywood actress Nora Arnezeder (Army of the Dead) and Guy Burnet (Oppenheimer) in lead roles.

Jaicheng Zxai Dohutia’s Assamese film Baghjan, Chhattisgarhi film Bailadila by Shailendra Sahu, the Hindi film Ek Jagah Apni by Ektara collective, Marathi movie Follower by Harshad Nalawde and Jai Shankar’s Kannada film Shivamma will be screened under the NFDC Film Bazaar Goes to Cannes.

Indian information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur will lead the Indian delegation at the red carpet ahead of the screening of opening film - Coupez - Michel Hazanivicius's movie-themed French zombie comedy. Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, musician Rahman, lyricist Prasoon Joshi, actor-filmmaker R Madhavan, actors Tamannaah Bhatia, Vani Tripathi, Pooja Hegde and folk artist Mame Khan will be part of the Indian delegate. Thakur will also inaugurate the India Pavilion.

Indian actor Deepika Padukone has joined seven artists from across the world as the jury at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. The eight-member jury choose the winner of the Palme d'Or and other awards for the main competition. French actor Vincent Lindon, ( The Measure of a Man) is presiding the team (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), writer-director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation(, Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier French writer Ladj Ly, American director Jeff Nichols and Italian actor Jasmine Trinca are also on the jury along with Padukone.

Shaunak Sen’s Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary film All That Breathes will also be screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2022.

FTII student Gourab Kumar Mullick’s Starfruits is also among nine fiction films and a documentary that have been shortlisted for La Fabrique les cinemas du monde - a programme hosted by Institute Francais as part of the Cannes Film Festival. All the 10 La Fabrique 2022 filmmakers will be mentored by Myanmar-born Taiwanese director Midi Z (Ice Poison).

Opening on May 17, the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes will run until May 25, while the Festival concludes on 28 May.
